HIV and AIDS are incurable disease. It is caused by HIV virus infection that weakened the body immune system. HIV virus is detectable in bodily fluids of the carrier. It is active in the blood, semen and vaginal fluids of those infected with the disease.
You may be exposed with HIV infection if
- You have a partner or spouse infected with HIV
- You are a sex worker or ever have sex with a sex worker
- You or your partner practising homosexual
- You have multiple sexual partners
- You have sexual intercourse with your spouse or partner who is a drug addict
- You are a drug addict and ever have shared needles
Are you infected with HIV?
The only way to tell if you have HIV is to take a HIV test. Knowing your own HIV status is the first step to save your life and your loved ones.
Steps to get the HIV test
- Go to any government health clinic
- See the doctor/ assistant medical officer/ nurse and request for the HIV test
- The doctor/ assistant medical officer/ nurse will give advise/ counseling regarding the test
- Your tip of finger will be pricked and one drop of blood will be taken for the test. The test result is ready in 15 minutes (using the Rapid Test kit)
- If the test result is ‘non-reactive’, you will be given further explanation. If you have risk of getting HIV, you will be advised to repeat the test in 3 to 6 months
- If the test result is ‘reactive’, advice will be given and your consent will be taken for the confirmatory test
The test is easily available, simple and painless. This service is provided FREE OF CHARGE at all government health clinics and hospitals. Your personal details and blood test result are kept confidential.
Steps for the HIV confirmatory test
- HIV confirmatory test is done confidentially. Your personal details and blood test result will only be known by your doctor or health staff who did the test.
- See the doctor or health staff on the day of your appointment (2 weeks after the blood test is taken) to get the confirmatory test result and advice/ counseling.
- If the blood test result is ‘negative’, you will be given 3 to 6 months appointment to repeat the confirmatory test.
- If the blood test result is ‘positive’, you will be referred to your preferred health clinic with HIV treatment service. Further care will include counseling, health examinations, blood tests and treatment services.
