WHY FASTING IS REQUIRED FOR X-RAY EXAMINATION?

Fasting for x-ray examination is necessary for adult patients undergoing examination of the abdominal area to ensure that the organs and anatomical structure are seen clearly and not obscured by faeces.

Why Fasting For X-ray Examination?

  • Fasting is necessary for adult patients undergoing examination of the abdominal area.
  • This is to ensure that the organs and anatomical structure are seen clearly and not obscured by faeces.
  • To reduce side effects if there is any complication occurring as a result of the usage of contrast media.

When To Fast?

  • Normally you would need to fast for the following;

– examinations involving the abdomen.

– special examinations requiring contrast media.

  • You will be given fasting instruction by the radiographer or a nurse when an appointment is made.

Meaning Of Fasting For X-ray Examination

  • It means that a patient is required to empty the digestive system at least 4-6 hours prior to the examination.
  • Drinking plain water is allowed during the fasting period.
  • The success of the examination depends on your:

– following the bowel preparation instruction;

– arriving at the appointed time.
