How To Use Pessaries

Introduction

Pessary is a drug that is inserted into the vagina to treat infections.

Example pessaries

Usually the composition of pessary comprises of active ingredients and non- active ingredients such as cocoa butter or vegetable oil. When inserted into the vagina, the pessary will melt at body temperature and will gradually release the active ingredient into the vagina. Pessaries are usually used for the treatment of medical problems related to the vagina.

Before using pessaries

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if:

  • You are allergic to any medicines
  • You have any medical problems

How to Use

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Read the instructions on the medicine label.
  3. Remove pessary and applicator from the aluminium foil or plastic.
  4. Put the pessary into the applicator and then insert the applicator with the pessary end into the vagina. If you are pregnant, do not use the applicator but insert the pessary directly into the vagina using your fingers.
  5. Insert the medication as deep as possible into the vagina either by the applicator or finger while lying down with knees bent and legs apart.
  6. If using the applicator, press the tip at the other end to push the pessary end into the vagina and subsequently remove the applicator from the vagina.
  7. Be in the position for about 15 minutes to ensure that the medication doesn’t come out.
  8. Wash hands again.

Storage

Keep all medications in a safe place and away from children.

Store the pessaries in the original container in a dark and cool environment unless otherwise instructed.

Do not store pessaries at temperatures above 25°C.

Do not use the pessaries after the expiry date, which is stated on the original container.

Special instructions

If you forgot a dose, take it immediately. However, if it is almost time for the next dose skip the dose and wait for the next dose.

Do not double the dose.

Pessaries may contain ingredients that can damage rubber. Therefore, if the use of contraception such as condoms and diaphragms intended, it may not be effective. There is a high risk of condom or diaphragm to be thin and torn during intercourse. It is recommended that rubber-based contraception is not used during treatment.

Pessaries which are liquified may be discharged from the vagina. To avoid your clothes dirty, use of pantyliner or pads are recommended.

Do not use tampons because it may absorb the medication before therapeutic action is seen. The use of pessary should be continued even during menstruation.

Wash applicator with hot water when you’re done using it, or if necessary use it for your next dose.

Despite feeling healed, it is important to use all pessaries supplied for the duration.

If you are not cured or condition worsens, please consult your doctor.

Use the pessaries based on the instructions labelled.

Cautions : Do not swallow pessaries.

Side Effects

If you experience any irritation or other side effects after using pessaries, please inform your pharmacist or doctor.
