Generally your basic needs can be simplified in the context of the daily living model in which the 12 basic activities of daily living [ADL] are listed. Together with other psychosocial needs, the highlighted needs are of concern because if met, they would enable you to be independent and could enhance your quality of life.

Home and Shelter

  • Decide where you want to live in your later years.
  • Make sure your house is situated near the relevant facilities.
  • Make sure the size and the condition of the house is right for you.
  • Decide whether you want your family or friends to live with you or you move in to live with them. If you favour this choice then consider the following points before making a final decision.
    • Make sure you understand and accept each person’s rights and obligations.
    • Make sure that the financial arrangements and implication are fully discussed and agreed.
    • Have some trial period.
    • Try to ensure that there is enough living space to allow sufficient privacy.

Safety Issues

  • Keep your home safe
  • Make a checklist of household hazards in your home
  • Alter your personal habits

Communication

The ability to communicate thoughts, ideas, and feelings empowers an older adult to be a part of a community and to avoid isolation. It imparts independence while allowing a means for necessary socialisation.

  • Learn to improve your communication skills
  • Go for a check up if you have problems with hearing as your doctor may recommend hearing aids
  • Your family may be required to learn new compensatory strategies to help with communication
