Cellulite

Question 1

What is cellulite?

Answer 1

Cellulite is unsmooth skin (dimpled) due to the layer of fat deposit under the skin. It can be found at the abdomen, legs / thigh, pelvis and usually develops after puberty. Cellulite commonly occurs in women but can also happen to both sexes.

Grades of cellulite

  1. Grade 1: no signs or symptoms that are clearly visible, but can be seen under microscopic examination.
  2. Grade 2: skin appears pale ,low temperature and less elastic together with the change seen in grade 1.
  3. Grade 3: visible roughness of the skin (like an orange peel) along with all grade 2 signs.

How cellulite is formed?

Answer 2

It is not known and understood. Among the theories put forward include:

  1. Hormonal factors – many view hormones like estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid and prolactin plays a role in the process the formation of cellulite.
  2. Genetic factors- certain genes are required for the formation of cellulite.These genes may increase the risk of an individual to certain properties associated with cellulite such as gender, race, low metabolism rate, distribution of fat under the skin and incomplete blood circulation.
  3. Diet – foods that contain too much fat, carbohydrates or salt and little fiber.
  4. Life style factors such as people who smoke, do not exercise and those who sit or stand too long.
  5. Clothing – tight underwear covering the buttocks will cause less blood flow.

Treatment for Cellulite?

Answer 3

No specific treatment that is scientifically successful or proven.

Recommendation:

  • Live a healthy lifestyle like consuming healthy food and low fat e.g. fruits, vegetables and high in fiber
  • Exercise regularly to maintain the required body weight
  • Reduce stress
  • Wear clothes that are not too tight

Question 4

Can I go for cellulite teatment at the slimming center?

Answer 4

This is the individual’s decision but you must ensure no prohibited materials are used which may cause harm.

Get advice and consultation from the doctors in your nearest clinic , nutritionists or other recognised experts before undergoing cellulite treatment.
