Social Development

What is social development?

Social development is a process where you get your beliefs, identity and behaviors within a society. What happens during this development?

  • Learn new responsibilities
    • Physical responsibilities:
      • Exercise, fitness and leisure
      • Food pyramid way
      • Healthy snacks
    • Social responsibilities (e.g. teamwork, caring for friends)
    • Academic responsibilities (e.g. group study)
    • Family responsibilities
  • Build new relationships
  • Develop and understanding of new roles in self and others
  • Develop social competence
  • Develop social skills
  • Develop autonomy
  • Establishing intimacy
  • Develop achievement preferences and goals
  • Center of social world shifts from family to friends
  • Peer group tends to be same-sex, later gender-mixed
  • Strong desire to conform to and be accepted by a peer group
  • Increasing conflict between adolescents and their parents
  • Family closeness most important protective factor against high-risk behavior
  • Possible confusion of roles and responsibilities leading to conflict may arise

What are the factors influencing social development?

  • Cultural and social structures
    • Attitudes and behaviors in a culture shape social development.
  • You grow according to social practices and expectations.
  • Parenting
  • Child-care customs by parents influence adolescents’ social development in:
    • Communication skills
    • Social skills (e.g. making friends)
    • Daily living skills (e.g. self-care, domestic and community skills)
    • Problem-solving skills
    • Spiritual skills
  • Financial Status
    • Your family’s financial status influences social activities.
  • Peer group influence
    • Peers have stronger influence on adolescents’ social development compared to their parents.
  • The media
    • The media is a strong social force in transmitting youth culture.
