The Emotional Effects Of Divorce On Children

Introduction

Emotion is a state of feeling that results in physical and psychological  changes in person. Basically, divorce is  a separation or termination of a marriage between a married couple.

In terms of Islamic legislation, divorce is happening when a couple terminated their marriage by Reciting ‘Talaq’.

Thus, the effects of divorce on children should not take lightly,  especially on their growth and development. The scientific studies of sociologist and psychologist have proven that there are negative effects of divorce. The factors are depending for:

  • Age
  • Gender and personality
  • The level of conflict between parents
  • The extent of moral support from close families and friends

Symptoms / Signs

Parents should refer children to a specialist if there are warning signs of divorce-related depression or anxiety such as:

  • Display compulsive behavior
  • Experiencing sadness and depression
  • Refusal of loved activities
  • Poor academic performance
  • Criticism and blaming himself/herself

Complication

In psychologist view, the ability of young children to adapt and cope with the tension of divorce is hard compared to adult children. Young children (aged between 6 to 9 years old) are easily felt the pain and depress deeply because they did not have a grasp of the current situation. Furthermore, they are still young to understand and control the feeling.

This causes children to experience:

  • Depression
  • Shyness or esoteric
  • Feeling ambivalent love between parents
  • Anger
  • Sensitive and feel abandoned

Treatment & Prevention

Helping a child copes  with divorce by using the following tips:

  •  Give assurance and love
  • Acknowledge their feelings and stay closed
  • Parents should remain calm and accepting kids’ behavior and emotion
  • Let them be honest without harming themselves and others
  • Parent should develop an amicable relationship with ex-spouse because watching you are being friendly can reassure children as well.
  • Tell them you will still be caring for them in every way.
  • Encourage your child to share their feelings and really listen to them
  • Read books about guidance of coping with separation can help children to adapt and cope the situation.
