What is the definition of marriage?

Marriage is a legal relationship or a legally recognized relationship, established by a civil or religious ceremony, between two people who intend to live together as sexual and domestic partners.

Marriage is the foundation of society and family life. It is the only legitimate way to indulge in intimacy between a man and a woman.

Marriage versus cohabitation

Research continually reveals that married people are generally physically healthier, happier, live longer, enjoy better mental health, are more fulfilled and less likely to suffer physical abuse.

Premarital cohabitation (living together as a family outside of legal marriage) does not bring the same benefits as marriage does. Instead, it brings increased conflict and aggression as well as increased chance of divorce in later marriages.

Tips for a happy and lasting marriage

  • Choose your partner wisely. The choice of a marriage partner is one of the most important decisions a person will make in his or her lifetime. Do not be rushed into marriage
  • Prepare yourself physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and financially before you decide to embark on marriage
  • Make marriage a priority in your life. Spend time with your partner and show your partner how important they are to you
  • Learn relationship and communication skills
  • Get as much education as you can before marriage
  • Marry in your twenties or older
  • Wait until marriage to have sex
  • Avoid living together before marriage
  • Build strong relationships with both side of parents and family
  • Attend a premarital course with your partner before marriage
